Penang road trippin' - Day 1

Breakfast at Ipoh before we departed

At the top of Kek Lok Si Temple

The view from the top of Penang Hill

Some colorful binoculars I refused to pay for usage

Love locks @ Penang Hill

Cute owl plushies at The Owl Museum

Signature dessert ABC, or ais batu campur. Essentially it's a shaved ice dessert with kidney beans, flavored syrup and other relevant condiments.

Oyster omelette (also known as 'Oh Chien') @ Anjung Gurney hawker center. This was way overpriced, frankly.

Night shot taken by Gurney Drive. Had no tripod, else there would have been more shots.

I've been to Penang numerous times before that I have not bothered with aimless photographing of all things "Penang". However, I do not frequently visit the island as frequently as I do Ipoh, so I figured I'd go ahead and capture my experience while I was there. Most of the memories are stored in video footage form, which I have not gotten along to compile and publish just yet. The next set of photographs should include a hiking trail, a beach and several museum artifacts. I hope I'll find the time to post them along, since my semester has begun.

On a different note, I attended my first creative writing class today and I received good remarks on my 15-minute impromptu monologue in class. My only issue had to do with delivery, which I agree with, given that I was partly mumbling and did not project my voice well enough. Apart from that, things are certainly looking up. U.S. History was pretty interesting, although I do hope I won't be the only girl in class for the rest of the semester. I did see some familiar faces, however, so I guess that's rather comforting to know. I have to admit that I was pretty nervous having to step into creative writing class since the rest of the class is composed of ADP junkies (which basically are the cool kids). And then there's me.

Well, I guess I'll find my voice soon enough and as long as I do, I will be fine. What's even more comforting than good remarks on the first day of class and familiar faces is the Holy Spirit. He was there even in creative writing, assuring me that I ought to be myself and that I will not have to worry. So I've found that I really can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Praise the Lord!

That's about it, I suppose. I've just spent almost 3 hours in the library editing photos and garnering fashion inspiration while waiting for CF. Prayer meet's about to begin so I ought to go.

Thanks for reading anyways. I love you, whoever you are, haha.

Fish nuggets and other things in between

Coffee and Eggs Benedict @ The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf.

My mum's take on their breakfast, with a twist - mushroom soup and fish nuggets, instead of eggs and Hollandaise sauce.

Oh and some peculiar salad dressing, presumably a hybrid of honey mustard and balsamic vinaigrette. I have to say though, it's an acquired taste. But I strongly rule against mixing any form of salad dressing with one another.

And moving on to last night..

Meet Mr. Tao. Tao Fu Fah. And Chia, Isaac Chia.

I was pretty bored while waiting for our burgers to be done at myBurgerlab. So yeah, my inner camwhore took over. Oh, his real name's Chris by the way.

Only we, the Nonsensical De-stress panel have every right to call him Fu Fah. For obvious reasons.

Awesome Fries (literally)..

..and Beautiful Mess 5.0.

I'm aware this doesn't exactly scream appetizing, considering it's uh, reckless appearance but I swear this is the shiznit and it was worth every ringgit I paid. I probably should have brought my DSLR instead of my tablet so this mother of burgers could be properly justified both aesthetically and tastefully.

But dinner was amazing. Nuff' said.

On a slightly more relevant note, I finally got around to run some errands today; one of which was to wash the car. Since I got my P license yesterday, I've been waiting for that grand opportunity to take this handsome out for a ride. However, when I went out to the porch this morning, hoping to execute the mentally planned rendezvous, the sight of my droplet scarred car made me think twice about doing so. So instead, I got out my pail and other paraphernalia and went ahead give my baby Bob a nice, cold morning shower.

Yes, his name is Bob. And yes, I do not give two hoots about the insults you are about to hurl at me for naming such a beauty with an incompetent and unappealing masculine name.
And no, I am not available for carpooling services, as of now.

Other than that, I was able to go out to the mall today. While the hunt for the third installment of the Across The Universe trilogy was rather unsuccessful, I managed to exchange a bag of old clothing for a H&M shopping voucher, catch up with Amanda over lunch at Fish & Co. as well as tea at Serai (Berry Pavlova for the win!), and watch Identity Thief. Also, the internet connection was salvaged today after my mum paid the bill and I officially have a video assignment on hand - the outcome of the Girls' Conference committee meeting earlier tonight, due tomorrow. It still hasn't quite hit me yet that it's due TOMORROW, but I'm sure I'll get it done in no time. I HOPE.

Anyhow, I'd better get some sleep. I still have that video assignment to work on after all tomorrow, and the fact that I have to hit campus tomorrow for a short briefing on my scholar's work which commences next Monday further reinstates just how important sleep is at this juncture of my life. Well, at least my reward is certain - one of those decent frappucinos from Starbucks, at half price with my primary school mates. Shweet!

Goodnight, fellas.

Nuggets : Cafe latte and a cream cheese bagel

I'm sorry I had to resort to this just to fill in the gaps. Lately I've been taken hostage by my emotions to the extent whereby I can no longer find emotional release in writing. Having established myself as a writer both by birth and by creed, this really sucks because I've lost the will to utilize words and sentences as a medium of catharsis. And presumably, as we all damn well know, what is a writer, if not an applicant and translator of thoughts into words, and words into text?

But I'm not about to give in. I won't allow myself to be taken aback by this frenzy of temporary emotions that threaten to pull me away from achieving my goals. All things occur for a reason, and I'm not about to let something like this dictate my self-worth. I will search within myself and I WILL FIND IT, by hook or by crook.

Until then, you're just going to have to bear with me. I suggest you start sipping on that cup of coffee and get a cream cheese bagel to complement your choice of beverage.

~

My name is Vivian Teoh.
I am a writer.
I am a strong, independent woman.
I do not rely on one's opinion of me to dictate my worth.
I will not allow my emotions to overwhelm me and reduce me into an impetuous and atrocious freak.
I will carry myself with utter dignity, in spite of my inner anguish,
And I will succeed.

Love is

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
1 Corinthians 13 : 4-7

Vivian is patient, Vivian is kind. Vivian does not envy, does not boast and is not proud. Vivian does not dishonor others, is not self-seeking, is not easily angered and keeps no record of wrongs. Vivian does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. Vivian always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

I first came across this method of adequately replacing the term "love" in this passage with one's name at a high school Christian fellowship camp two years ago. I managed to perform this declaration a couple of times after that, but I somewhat never got around to truly comprehending what the purpose of this exercise was. However, as I'm pondering upon today's events and analyzing the variables that resulted in the fallacies that occurred earlier in the day, I'm beginning to receive some enlightenment regarding the matter. I am undeniably a work in progress and until I am able to achieve all the virtues listed in the bible passage above, I will always remain a diamond in the rough. Therefore, the declaration I have derived from this scripture must continually be exercised in order to see His work come into completion.

I have to admit, it has been quite a challenging week with all the assignments, tests and excursions I've had to participate in. Furthermore, the fact that I'm keen to carry out 21 days of fasting has taken quite a toll on me physically as I've been minutely dehydrated and my sore throat is returning. I've been performing the one-meal fast for dinner every day since last Sunday and I must say, I have been making some rather detrimental choices when it comes to what to have for lunch, as I'm someone who fancies spicy and fried food. Having already begun experiencing the adverse effects of my cumbersome diet, I've pledged not to consume large amounts of spicy and fried food for the next two weeks. I earnestly hope my throat will get better as I perform what I have pledged.

On a spiritual note, I've been able to pray and worship God diligently on almost all occasions since I'm completely relying on His strength to help me remain focused on my work and assignments in the midst of fatigue. It is really by His grace that I've been able to execute a week of prayer and fasting and I'm really looking forward to growing spiritually each and every day as I adjourn into the next two weeks up until Good Friday. There were days (or nights) when I just felt like giving up and returning back to my stagnant and egotistical self, presuming I would progress no further, but I'm glad God put me up to the challenge and I'm determined to pull through. After all, man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.

Vivian always perseveres. I will pull through this, despite how unwelcome the circumstances appear to be. I will grow as a result of overcoming these atrocities and I will come out stronger after every obstacle.

Someday my love, we will have reach full completion in God's work in us. Until then, we'll have to learn to embrace our respective imperfections and focus on the goodness that is within us :)

Brevity

I've discovered the reason behind my loss for words as of late. It was because the wrong song was playing in the background. Music really does a splendid job of transforming the atmosphere you're in and rendering one capable of expressing a million emotions while still achieving comprehension. It's odd really, but something I find comforting, nevertheless.

So, back to my day.

Today was the beginning of my self-proclaimed culinary adventure. Since there's only a mere 11 more days until the first day of my pre-university life, I figured I should attempt all the recipes I've been dying to try since pre-SPM. So last night, I conducted an intensive Google search on all the AFC and Food Network recipes I have been keeping an eye on for months and began jotting all the recipes down with my pen on used paper. So far, I've made notes for 4 recipes with one of which I will be attempting to cook for dinner this weekend. I honestly hope nothing comes up at the last minute and that I have sufficient time to carry out what I have cerebrated since my grandmother usually prefers to do the honours of putting food on the table on weekdays. With a recipes reserved for this weekend's self-declamatory cook off, I had another three more recipes left. Two of the recipes consisted of mostly baking which could be done during weekdays since my grandmother is no master in the art of pattiserie.

The first recipe of the two I attempted today was craggy chocolate cake. After witnessing the making of this visually delectable dessert on French Cooking at Home with Laura Calder, I instantly decided I would someday try it. And today just happened to be that day I had long awaited. Unlike your typical chocolate cake, which includes the use of flour and baking powder and nonsense whatsoever, this cake only required eggs, chocolate, butter and sugar. The ingredients were easily attainable and the promised end result was not a conventional fluffy cake, but a cake with a cookie like consistency on the top and a moist centre within. I couldn't help but delve into the notion of a meringue textured sweet treat, so I went straight on ahead to purchase the ingredients and then adjourned to make the cake.

Here's a pleasant (at least to me) image of the outcome.

Doesn't it look absolutely delectable?

Honestly, I don't think I will ever bake this again unless I obtain proper assistance. It is extremely taxing having to alternately whisk two different bowls of eggs and sugar while watching over a water bath when heating chocolate and butter. It seemed so easy when I was watching it on the show, but I now realise that it is no easy feat and it takes practice to be able to perfect such multitask. Also, the egg whites somehow refused to form stiff peaks despite having being whisked over an extended period of time. Perhaps I have only myself to blame for being so incompetent in the kitchen. My right arm hurt within a matter of seconds when I was whisking those whites. Sigh. I'm assuming that was why the cake did not rise as well as I had expected it to and did not produce a craggy top out of the oven. It tasted more like a brownie instead, with a crisp top and chewy bottom. Oh well, at least my freshly whipped cream worked out and it complemented the dessert perfectly to balance off the sweetness of the cake.

I must say, I have new found respect for all chefs, both culinary and pattiserie. Today certainly marked the beginning of my culinary endeavours. I just hope this weekend's dinner will go as planned and that I will be able to execute as planned.

Alright, enough talk about food. I'm pretty sure you are now susceptible to raiding the kitchen for snacks to nullify your current hunger.

On a less appetizing and yet enthusiastic note, I will be seeing the high school group tomorrow. It feels really uncanny discussing about them as if they were but a distant memory, honestly. I only left school two months ago and yet I feel as if the notion of school offers a sense of unfamiliarity, a strangeness I can't seem to grasp. Anyhow, away with the deep thoughts. I'm superbly glad that I will be able to go out with this bunch of amazing and individually unique group of people before they and soon, I step into the world of tertiary education. While Ka Yan has attended her orientation, the rest of us are pretty much anticipating to see what college life (or for me, uni life) will bring. But we could not possibly do it without having one last get-together to embrace the moments we've had and to reignite this flame of friendship, hoping that it does not do away.

Oh God, why do I sound so poetic? -.- Right, I shall snap out of it.

Anyway, tomorrow will be our last outing together before college/uni begins. And I will cherish it and sing to my heart's content in the karaoke. I will try not to lose my voice, however, since I will be taking on another valuable prospect the following day.

I'll be meeting Dia Frampton in person! *inner indie squealing with immense joy*

The fact didn't sink in until today when an acquaintance of mine who is part of the video crew asked if he could use my DSLR to record the interview. It was then that I realised how crucial it was for me to get my act together, embrace my outgoing personality and rock the interview. I'm really glad that I won't be alone on my first official journalism assignment. Moreover, as I was informed regarding the possibility of interviewing Dia Frampton today, I realised this would be my first official encounter/communion/whatever with a recording artiste.

It's amazing, the opportunities that have arose in such a short period of time. It seemed at first a long and dreadful holiday, but now I realise just how much freedom I have to do what I have been wanting to do for such a long time. And it feels great. And I ultimately thank God for all of this :)

So yeah, that's pretty much what I've been up to lately. I haven't been reading or writing fiction in the past few days though. Honestly, sometimes I can't help but think that when life somewhat exudes a certain excitement, a sudden anticipation that surges through our veins, we become obliged to abandon our devices of amusement in order to truly live the life as we perceive should be. We then escape our escapism to embrace this reality, this tangibility we once deemed imperfect and abhorring. We think that we have discovered new meaning in life only to watch all of it fade to black as quickly as it presented itself before retreating to our dull lives where the cycle repeats itself.

And that, my friend, is what life does to us. A form of mental torture really, but what more can I say?

I can only cross my fingers and pray.

A merry Christmas

Of the Christmas tree @ home

All photos above were taken at the Christmas Harvest Event @ Damansara Perdana

Christmas gifts and the aftermath of the unwrapping.

I thought I'd summarize my Christmas with photos instead of words since I haven't done that in a long time. Furthermore, I've been quite busy in the past few days that I haven't had time to blog so the photos will suffice for now. If I have any further thoughts regarding the festive occasion, I will blog about it, but I don't expect that to happen so soon. I'm about to hit the mall with my friends to catch Les Miserables, which we have been anticipating for the longest time! It is finally out! I also have a Christmas dinner to attend to at a friend's place tonight, so I don't expect to find time to blog until tomorrow.

To conclude, my OOTD (outfit of the day) on Christmas Eve. I've jumped on the ootd bandwagon, so it seems. Heh.

Dress from H&M
Bangle from Inapickleble Designs
Earrings from Diva

Blessed Christmas to all of you and have a great festive season ahead! :)
